These maps depict the crop indemnities from record breaking years in recent crop insurance history. The first map shows the indemnities paid by counties totaling just over 4 billion dollars by the year's end in 2002. Following that, the second map, shows the indemnity figures for 2008, amounting to about 8.6 billion dollars.

Historic 2012 Drought

There is no doubt the 2012 drought has been very costly to both plant and animal agriculture, as widely reported. By many accounts, it is the most damaging drought in over 50 years. Some corn fields were declared a total loss as early as July as a result of the drought. Moreover, some ranchers started liquidating livestock by that time because of rapidly rising feed costs.
